Bearing Witness

Exhibition

The Original Gallery, London

22/11/24 - 01/12/24

“Artists are people before they are artists, so their concerns are very much the same as other people’s — as varied as those of the rest of the human race. It would be pleasant to sit in one’s studio and just play with colour and line. All painting involves this, of course, but for most of us it cannot stop there. We are exposed to the world, which, at present, is deeply troubled: wars and rumours of wars, climate change, and political crises all press on us. In some way, we are called upon to use whatever gifts we have to bear witness. This witness may be oblique and metaphorical, but it is what gives purpose to painting. Poetry, as Auden observed, makes nothing happen —- but it can make people think, if just for a moment. And we are required to do that.” - Barbara Hope Steinberg

After the success of CrowPlaugeFire, Jake was asked by Barbara to score her new exhibition, Bearing Witness. Covering a wide range of topics from wars and climate change, to political crises and hidden agendas, the score combines with the artworks to enhance the visual experience and further explore the purpose behind Barbara’s paintings. The score will be played exclusively at the Bearing Witness exhibition. See below for three select previews of Jake’s score.
