Burn the Bra follows the story of how Betty, a working woman and wife has been pushed to her limits. Whether that be at home or at work she finds the root of all her problems revolve around the existence of men. After meticulously drawing up a blue print plan on how to possibly turn men into women, she decides to pitch it to her weekly women’s book club. The ladies position themselves as a Ponzi scheme selling ‘Rebirth for fitness and focus’ supplements, but these supplements are far from focus and fitness enhancing, they are actually a supplement with an extremely high percentage of oestrogen, enabling Betty’s goal of turning men into more than men, but women. They go all around town, in attempts to spread the word, seeking out women ‘in need’, eventually creating an epidemic. Nine months later, we see the ladies of the book club now in a dystopian future, where the world they created was far from perfect and they are to blame. The ladies managed to turn patriarchy into matriarchy, taking them further away from the goal of gender equality . They realise that a world without men and women acknowledging each other for their strengths and weaknesses and understanding that we are ultimately equals wasn’t a world which achieved the true meaning of feminism.
